Why Inspection Findings Are Only Part of the Picture

Understanding how inspection findings can be translated into proportionate and defensible decisions

Fire door findings should always be considered within the context of the building, its occupants and its wider fire safety arrangements

Why Inspection Findings Are Only Part of the Picture

Fire door inspections are often viewed as the end of the process. In reality, they are only the beginning.

An inspection identifies findings, observations and potential shortcomings, but the true value of the inspection lies in what happens afterwards. Responsible Persons, Principal Accountable Persons, Managing Agents and property owners must then determine what action, if any, is proportionate and appropriate.

This is where professional judgement becomes essential. Not every finding requires immediate replacement, extensive remedial works or significant expenditure. Equally, some findings may warrant prompt attention to maintain the effectiveness of the fire safety arrangements within the building.

The challenge is moving from defect identification to defensible decision-making.
